Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma. Pleural (pleura is the thin lining or coverings of lungs) mesothelioma generally occurs to individuals exposed to high level of asbestos. Exposure to high level of asbestos for 10 or more years is generally required for pleural mesothelioma to develop. Pleural mesothelioma may occur, like other forms of mesothelioma, even decades (sometimes as late as 30 years after last exposure to asbestos) after last exposure to asbestos.

Pleural mesothelioma may start as simple pleural disease such as calcification of pleura or thickening of pleural lining and it is not uncommon to diagnose them as pleural calcification, pleural thickening or pleural plaques. As these pleural diseases are not fatal disease, they may be ignored and later on these pleural diseases may lead to development of pleural mesothelioma. Pleural diseases may not be fatal but they impair normal functioning of lungs and should be addressed appropriately. If a patient with pleural disease gives a history of asbestos exposure even only for a brief period the diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma should be considered.

Pleural disease such as pleural plaques can be starting point of pleural mesothelioma, an aggressive form of cancer that occurs only due to exposure to asbestos and no other causative factor has been proven. Although pleura are the origin of pleural mesothelioma, it can spread to chest wall and other areas such as abdomen very fast.

Mesothelioma generally cause death within a year of diagnosis, but early detection by recognizing asbestos exposure can lead to early diagnosis and better survival. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can lead to longer survival than untreated and late diagnosis patients of mesothelioma.

Chest Pain: A Common Symptom of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is an incurable form of advanced lung cancer caused by prior exposure to asbestos.  Malignant pleural mesothelioma begins when an asbestos fiber becomes inhaled and lodges in the pleura, or thin membrane sac surrounding the lung.  There is a long latency period, up to sixty years, between the time the asbestos enters the body and cancer develops.

One of the most common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma is chest pain, shortness of breath, and painful coughing.   About 40% of those diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma will experience chest pain and shortness of breath, especially as tumors grow and put pressure on different internal organs.  Most importantly, there are pain management techniques that can help.

One pain management method is palliative chemotherapy, intended not to cure the cancer but to relieve symptoms and help the patient to feel more comfortable.  Another option is to use narcotics to manage pain and other prescription medications to help stop persistent coughing.  Lastly, a therapy known as chest physiotherapy that can be taught to home caregivers is another option to remove blockages in the lungs, open airways and make breathing easier.

To experience severe chest pain or shortness of breath can be quite scary for patients and caregivers alike.  As the disease progresses, sometimes emergency procedures are required, like cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Symptoms, Causes & Care of Pleural Mesothelioma Effusion

Effusion is the escape of fluid from a vessel into a body cavity. In some cases, mesothelioma sufferers may have certain types of effusion due to their exposure to asbestos fibers, pleural effusion being one of the more common types of effusion.

Pleural effusion happens when an increase of fluid is present between the two membranes that surround the lungs, known as the pleura. When the fluid exceeds the fluid absorption level, pleural effusions occur. The pleura provide protection for the lungs and chest cavity.

Chest CT will help to show pleural thickening, pleural based mass, loculecollections of fluid, or pleural calcification.

Effusion is a serious symptom of mesothelioma that may lead to other symptoms of mesothelioma cancers. Individuals that suspect an effusion must seek immediate medical attention.

Surgical Treatment of Pleural Mesothelioma

All patients diagnosed to have pleural mesothelioma should receive some form of treatment, which can extend the lifespan and survival with latest treatment modalities that are available, although there is no cure for pleural mesothelioma, as is the case for most of the cancers. At present treatment modalities for pleural mesothelioma include, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy and the treatment option depends on many factors such as the stage of pleural mesothelioma, spread to other organs of the body, age of the patient and general health of the patient.

Surgery for pleural mesothelioma:

Surgery (resection of part of lung) should be performed in all cases of pleural mesothelioma, if diagnose at early stage. If at the time of diagnosis, the pleural mesothelioma is in late stage surgical modality may not yield result as the disease most like has already metastatized to other organs of body and surgery will not help much. If surgical resection is performed at an early stage of the disease, it can slow down the spread of the disease.

The common surgical procedures for treatment of pleural mesothelioma include pneumonectomy (removal of a part or entire lung which is also used in treatment of lung cancer), extrapleural pneumonectomy and pleurectomy (removal of part or whole of pleura). Extrapleural pneumonectomy involves removal of entire lung with removal of the pleura of affected lung, diaphragm and pericardium (the mesothelial lining which covers heart). Extrapleural pneumonectomy is best suited for treatment of pleural mesothelioma patients.
